Introduction

This project will examine the role of National Day songs, as a form of popular culture, in forging a national consciousness that promoted or reinforced the government’s hegemony across the years. Our analysis includes a close reading of the underlying ideological messages behind the National Day songs, and traces its changes across time. Lastly, there have been a growing trend of contentious responses to the politics of the songs.
